WRITING YOUR CVHaving been in the recruitment industry for over 16 years, we can provide you with some expert advice around writing your CV. Here are our top tips for writing a great CV, making yourself stand out and getting that interview.

Keep it short It’s unlikely that hiring managers and in-house recruiters will have time to read through reams of pages of a CV. Regardless of the length of your career, it’s really only necessary to go into detail about your most recent roles – perhaps the last 3 or 4 – or any roles that are particularly relevant to the job you are applying for. Any other roles can be listed with one line to ensure that there are no gaps on your CV. If you can keep it to 2 – 3 pages, great.

Keep it neat Make sure your formatting is on point, your fonts aren’t all over the place and your themes match up; for example if one job title is in bold, then make sure all the other job titles are in bold, too. If you use bullet points, use the same size and shape throughout the document; this will help to stop the CV looking messy, which makes it easier to read and therefore hold the reader’s attention.

Start with a bang You need to ensure that the first few lines of your CV grab the reader’s attention – because you want them to continue reading. We like a profile at the start of the CV; a few lines telling the hirer exactly what you do, what you’re good at, and what you can do for them.

Tailor it You don’t have to write a CV and use the same one for each job application. You can tailor it. If you have skills that are specifically required for that particular job you are applying for, bring them to the top of the CV. If you can, talk about what you have done in your latest role that matches the job spec and desirable skills.

Sell yourself Don’t be shy to use language on your CV that really sells you as a candidate. Perhaps include your key achievements for each role, outlining what you’ve done in your career that has been outstanding, especially if this has included something tangible like saving money or writing a new process. This could be the difference between you and another candidate, and in a competitive market, you need that edge!

Work with a good agency There are many advantages to partnering with a good recruitment agency in your job search rather than just going it alone. A recruitment agency will always be motivated to go the extra mile to secure you a position which means they will spend hours chasing feedback, work hard to sell your skillset to hiring managers, provide a sounding board for you throughout the process and give you advice and knowledge about the company and hirers. Once they have secured you an interview they can give you interview tips and preparation, and if this progresses to an offer they can negotiate on your behalf, having the awkward conversations about salary and package. Applying directly can be a good strategy but using an agency, with all of the above in mind, can give you an edge. We often have situations where in-house recruitment teams and hiring managers aren’t sure on a candidate’s profile, but because we have good relationships with them we talk through these concerns and they trust our recommendations. This has often resulted in job offers for candidates who may not otherwise have got an interview.

Be Pro-Active Don’t just apply for adverts and wait to be contacted. In a busy and competitive market, it pays to be pro-active. Using LinkedIn to find contacts can be a great tool – search for people that work in your industry, or sector-specific recruiters, and send them an invite or a message. Even trying to get a casual coffee meeting booked in can be very useful. 

Applying to adverts Applying online for appropriate roles can be part of your multi-pronged approach. You can find adverts not just on the traditional job boards, but also on LinkedIn, Facebook, Google Jobs and of course, direct websites.

Prepare Make sure that you prepare well for interviews; look at LinkedIn profiles to get an idea about who you are meeting; do some research on the company; and think about how you can sell yourself and examples you can give of some of your best work. Good preparation will instil you with confidence, and can stop nerves getting the better of you.
